World Masters, Riccione, Italy, 2012

Date: 3-9/06/2012

Riccione, Italy was the host for the World Masters Swimming Championships 2012. The meet attracted over 9500 swimmers and provided some of the most crowded warm ups ever seen. At one point it was standing room only in the men's warm up pool and the events ran past midnight on one day despite starting at 7:30 am. With the flood lights on and the spectator area full the swimmers were greeted with cheers from the crowd as they got on the blocks. It was a test of endurance as the meet ran for seven full days with GB swimmers winning 12 gold, 18 silver and 35 bronze medals.

Oundle's Nicola Latty won two gold medals and one silver medal in the 40-44 age group, an age group that included former Olympic 200m freestyle champion Claudia Poll.

GB Masters, Sheffield, 2012

Date: 4-6/05/2012

The GB Masters Long Course Championships 2012 were completed without a hitch despite initial organisational problems. The championships were first assigned to Plymouth until it was realised the new pool would not be built in time. They were then moved to Cardiff until it was realised that their was a little rugby match going on (Wales vs. France in the Six Nations) and the cheapest available hotel room in the city was over £700 a night. Finally, the event was held at Sheffield, probably the fastest pool in the UK, and familiar territory for GB Masters swimmers.

The meet was a success for Barry O'Brien who broke two British records and lead Oundle's swimmers to six gold medals at the 2012 championships.
