Amy Swims Windermere - and Back Again

After completing the 10.5 mile length of Lake Windermere last year Amy Mellor decided to double the challenge. She successfully swam the 21 mile two-way race this year.

Amy completed the swim in 11 hrs 51 min. To add to the challenge, the two-way event takes place overnight. Each swimmer is accompanied by a rowing boat with the boat crew providing the navigation and frequent food breaks (gel packs, sweets and sugary drinks). During the breaks the swimmer must not touch the boat as this would result in disqualification. Pushing off from the bottom of the lake is also against the rules, but there aren't many locations where touching the bottom would be possible.

Despite the cold water the race rules only allow one regular swimsuit, a cap and a pair of goggles. This event is only for the toughest and strongest distance swimmers from around the country. Congratulations go to Amy on another incredible swim. Read More...
